Vija Celmins, Untitled, 1970, two-colour litograph © Vija Celmins
Vija Celmins rose to fame in the 1970s, making representations of the ocean, the desert, the night sky and spider webs, with a variety of techniques and media. All are based on press cuttings found and taken out of context. Her engravings created in various techniques often conceal the artistic process itself, forcing the viewer to take a closer look at the works. The exhibition at the Secession is the first retrospective of the artist in Austria.
