Europe in thirty‑eight scenes – Marek Świdrak

The now ending year 2018, which by the decision of the European Union became a year of celebrating European Cultural Heritage, is the right moment to take a look at the most important EU projec in this area, the European Heritage Label (EHL). »

Znak Dziedzictwa Europejskiego – Michel Magnier

2018 marks the 5th anniversary of the first four European Heritage Label Sites designations. Five years might look long, but it is a short period for this kind of initiative. Still, the European Heritage Label is a  successful action. »

Nowa Huta: Poland’s Unfinished Utopia – Katherine Lebow

Dubbed Poland’s “first socialist city” in Stalinist propaganda, the new town of Nowa Huta was meant to transform not just Poland’s physical, but its social and psychological landscape. Was Nowa Huta a utopian project? Two visions of utopia, those of Karl Popper and Zygmunt Bauman, suggest some surprising answers. »

Bohdan Pniewski Servant or master? – Grzegorz Piątek

Bohdan Pniewski’s career is one of the greatest mysteries of 20th‑century Polish architecture. How is it possible that the ideologists of socialist realism accepted the formula of nationalised modernism developed by him before the war, and the favourite architect of the Piłsudski regime became a creator of the landscape in the capital of communist Poland? »

Laco Teren – Nothing Will Stop Us

The exhibition of Laco Teren (born in 1960 in Bratislava) presents the key points of his artistic program and comprehensively captures his unique artistic and genuinely “versatile” personality. He was one of the leading figures of the post‑Modernist generation, which in the mid‑1980s appeared on the art scene with a program of Neo‑Expressionist painting inspired by the Italian trans‑avant‑garde and German Neue Wilde movement. »

“I am an artist of the world…” Philip de László (1869–1937)

This small but significant exhibition will mark the 150th anniversary of Philip de László’s birth in Budapest. Organised in collaboration with The de Laszlo Archive Trust, the display will show some 15 of the artist’s most distinguished international portraits. It is nearly 100 years since a solo exhibition of Philip de László’s work was held in Budapest, so this tribute is long overdue.  »

    Original Bauhaus

The Bauhaus existed for only 14 years in Germany, but for 100 years its ideas have been passed on and its products relaunched, imitated, and further developed. Marking the centenary of the Bauhaus’s founding, the Bauhaus‑Archiv and the Museum für Gestaltung’s exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie is presenting famous, familiar, and forgotten Bauhaus originals and recounting the history behind the objects.  »

    Alberto Giacometti

The retrospective presents the works by one of the major 20th‑century artists, sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966). His main theme was the human figure. He became well known for compelling elongated figures done after the Second World War, but no less important are his artworks from the interwar period, when he was a key member of the Paris avant‑garde. »
